Save a Girl Child India?

According to a study published in the Britain’s leading medical journal, the Lancet, some 10 million female fetuses may have been aborted in India over the past two decades following pre-natal gender checks! says Google

Fewer daughters have been born to couples who have not yet had a boy. This was the conclusion of a study on female fertility from a continuing Indian national survey of 6 million people in 11 million households.

Analyzing information about 133,738 births, the researchers found that the deficit in the number of girls born as second children was more than twice as great among educated mothers than among illiterate ones. The Lancet study noted that by conservative estimate, pre-natal sex determination and selective abortion accounted for 0.5 million missing girls yearly for over the past two decades.

This reminds me of China’s failed one child policy, pursued by the government since 1979 in order to control population. , which also led to millions of abortion of female fetuses. The inhuman practice of killing female fetuses raises serious ethical, social and economic questions, whatever may the underlying reasoning. What do you think?

  • I saw another news that the Indian doctors have disputed the claim of the study you quote.

  • Yes..we will follow up on this. The topic has important ethical, social, demographic and legal implications. While women's right to choose is important, it is also important that women are not forced to abort against their wish, by their husbands.

  • In male dominated society of India even Doctors feel bad when they have two daughetrs and take third chance in the hope that they will be 'luky'. if not they feel bad. There are enough examples where the woman is killed for producing daughters only. Also divorce in such case is possible. Enforcement of law in India is too hopeless and any amount of laws and education is not going to help. In Maharashtra there is some liberal view in this regard but North India is worst in this case.

  • Comment#2 from the anonymous: Thanks, you tell us what the reality is in India..hopefully, as the society gets more educated and elightened in terms of the true meaning of its religions, it will begin to tolerate "girls only" situations and not discriminate against girl fetuses.

  • An intellectual fraud was discovered today in another study by Lancet you quote.

In wars, the story is opposit. More women survive and the society feels the shortage of males.

  • The last comment is true. After second world war there was accute shortage of men in Germany after 1945. hence German Females have more respect and freedom than in other European countris.
Even in Islam tradition of four wives was allowed as in desert tribal wars men were getting killed and there was shortage of men.
In India in Kerala women are more than men so also in Assam where there is maternal system is prevelent.
Rajastan, UP and Bihar are the states where male domination is more women are less in number.

  • It looks good to comment on things happening around us, however if asked to suport the cause the same very people just turn away, recently i met a poor family from a small village having a girl child suffering from fits since her childhood, now the childe is around 13 years and this poor family has lost almost everything just to get proper treatment in small towns but there seems to be no improvement in the childs condition, now i wish to support this family in geting some good treatment done for the child but in my present state i too can not bear the complete burden of the expensive treatment, hence asked a lo of people -- the so called intellectuals for some guidance and help for this family --- result -- every one of them is capable of delivering hour long lecture on saving the girl child, their future their rights etc etc, but no one has the guts to actually help in bringing the actual change in our society. -- my heart cries for such people and i pity them.
