Farmers Suicides in India

A number of posts have since been published in this blog. However, we want to bring to your attention two detailed comments that this blog has since received on this tragic topic. These relate to farmers' lack of knowledge about genetically modified varieties of cotton, the poor state of the extension service, and what needs to be done with a kind of missionary zeal and mass media to eliminate or reduce the incidence of farmer suicides.

  • Sharad Pawar has said that farmers' suicides are due to mismanagement and lack of understanding of their problems. Mr. pawar has been in govt for many years and now he is agri minister also.
Post independence all major parties have ruled this country called India. All are therefore responsible for the plight of farmers. Instead of declaring relief packages to farmers it is a good idea that each MLA and chief of state corporation who enjoys ministerial benefits adopt two families where farmers have commited suiside. he should use the money from his monthly salary and not from the allowances and funds made available to MLAs for development work in their constituency. Giving relief pkg is public expenditure/tax-payers money. MLAs shd suffer for what they have not done for years. I strongly object to the pkg declared by PM as even half the amount will not be spent and whatever is spent even 20% will not reach the victims and their families. Anything given in cash invites curruption in India.
